Trend Tuesday

I wanted to share one of my favorite trends at the moment…geode and marble everything!  I love the idea of incorporating this natural pattern into so many different items, from wallpaper to phone cases.  I was recently searching for a piece of geode art for a project and came across so many fun natural stone themed items.  I’ve collected a few of my favorites below!

Jackson’s Nursery –> Big Boy Room! Part 1

One of my favorite rooms that I’ve ever done is obviously, Jackson’s nursery.  We were living in Memphis at the time and the room that became his nursery was my office.  I never really decorated my office since I knew that it would probably become the nursery at some point in the near future.  We had lived in the house for only a couple of months before we got pregnant.  As soon as I found out he was a boy, I had to get started on the nursery!  I spent a lot of time searching for inspiration and came across this photo from Project Nursery….

I loved the palette accent wall idea!  I thought about hiring someone to do it for me (since neither my husband or I are very handy), but then wasn’t sure that I wanted to actually nail all this palette wood to the wall, especially knowing that we probably wouldn’t be in Memphis forever.  I met a faux finisher in Memphis and had inquired with her about painting the wood slats on the wall…she agreed that she could do it but it was more than I wanted to spend.  So then I thought, what about wallpaper?  I searched the internet and found this wallpaper that looked like palettes of wood, so I thought I’d give it a try!  I painted the rest of the walls Sherwin Williams Passive Gray and then did the wallpaper on the crib wall.  It turned out great!  Everybody that walked in thought that it was real wood, so I was happy with the result!

I loved the animal heads in the inspiration photo that I found too!  I found these paper maché ones from West Elm that were perfect for each side of the window. (I don’t think they have them anymore but found some similar ones here from Target).  I went back and forth on whether to purchase a gray or white crib and dresser but ended up going with the Fillmore Collection in white from Pottery Barn Kids.  I also decided on the navy and white trellis rug from Pottery Barn Kids (It looks like it’s not available anymore, but I found a similar one from the Home Depot).  The rocker/glider and ottoman was also from Pottery Barn Kids!

Here are a few final photos of how his nursery turned out!

This balloon was a gift from our sweet friends.

It was the perfect place to bring our sweet boy home to!

It’s hard to believe this was two and a half years ago!  We moved to Charleston when Jackson was just a few months old but I decided to “re-create” his room at our house in Mt. Pleasant since he didn’t really get to live in it for that long!  Recently, we transitioned him to a big boy bed and his room has changed a little since then.  I will share some photos his new big boy room next!

Decking the Halls! And Life Lately!

Life has been so crazy lately with finishing up a few design projects, holiday festivities, and a 2 year old who takes the majority of my time!  He’s currently napping which doesn’t happen very often anymore, so I thought I’d take advantage and write a post!  Finding the time to write has been much harder than I expected but I am going to make it more of a priority from now on.

One of my best friends, Ann, was visiting from NYC last week and we definitely got in the Christmas spirit!  She insisted on helping us decorate for Christmas and it just so happened we were having my husband’s work Christmas party at our house last Friday so we were ready to host!  There’s nothing like having a house decked out for Christmas!  I thought I’d share what we did and a few pictures from life lately 🙂

This is probably my favorite spot in the house!  We love having a fire outside on these chilly nights!

As I said, we hosted my husband’s work Christmas party at our house on Friday.  I was so busy getting everything ready I barely took any pictures but had to take one of this cheesy garlic bread that I made (in the shape of a Christmas tree!) I saw the recipe at  It was a hit!  I would definitely recommend it for your holiday party!

We finished off the weekend by celebrating our friend James’ birthday at Oak Restaurant!  It’s is definitely a Charleston staple…the food is always delicious!  And I was loving this huge antique mirror above the fireplace!

Project Inspiration – “Classic Nautical”

I’m beginning a new project for a client who describes the look that they like as “Classic Nautical.”  Think British Colonial…natural materials, blues and whites, beadboard, and grass cloth!  I’ve been searching for some inspiration and wanted to share some photos with you.  I’d love to hear what you like & dislike!  The home needs a lot of work but I will definitely share some before & after photos when it’s complete!

A sophisticated style wordpress

This entry has the perfect combination of old and new.  Loving the antique runner and bench paired with the new pillows and mirror.

Grasscloth!  I definitely think I want to do grass cloth in the master bedroom, but loving it in this bathroom too, especially paired with that mirror!

I like the large coffee table in this photo.  My client has an existing coffee table that we will use and I like the styling in this photo.  The stacks of books, the hurricanes, and the orchids in the center.  Love a good coffee table!

Beautiful!  the crisp white walls with the different shades of blue and the hints of gold (especially that chandelier) make for a beautiful room.  I’d like to vacation here someday!

This whole vignette is perfect!  The bird prints, the rattan chairs, and the navy chest create a layered and lived-in look.

Another gorgeous living room.  We are going to add some built-ins on either side of my client’s fireplace.  I was originally thinking we would paint them white, but then I thought, how cool would it be to paint them navy blue?  Still working on the perfect color, but there are some popular ones later in the post!

Another awesome tray styling!  This would be beautiful on a coffee table, bar cart, or side table.  Loving the combination of the basket, the coral, and the blue and white porcelain.

This is definitely a little too funky for the project that I’m doing but just thought it was so cool!  Would love to see it in a beach house someday!

Here are some great blue paint colors!  Paint is a hard thing to choose so I always recommend buying samples from the paint store and putting them up on the wall before you decide!  Light can have a huge effect on how the paint appears.

Let me know what you think!  I’m definitely inspired, hope you are too!

Can’t wait to show you the before and after photos!

Happy Fall!

Even though it’s October 16th, it still feels like summer here in Charleston.  Despite the weather, we are all anxious for fall to arrive and people have started decorating their homes!  I have seen so many amazing fall door steps and wanted to share some ideas!  I’m still working on mine but will post when it’s complete.

Happy decorating!

I love the rustic simplicity of this porch.  The mix of the metal and wood pots, the light colored green and white pumpkins with the topiaries creates such a perfect scheme!

This brick home just calls for this grand fall decor.  I love the layers of mums, cabbages, pumpkins, gourds, and corn husks…it feels so rich and lush!

Love this idea for some planters!  Such a great way to add fall color to your porch.  I especially love the branches added for some height!

Another great idea…apples and blankets!  Both are such a fun fall accent that can easily be placed to give that warm, cozy fall feeling!  One of my neighbors always puts a throw on her rocking chair, and I love the look.  Might have to try that this year.

I loved this idea from Style Your Senses!  She created a pumpkin topiary with fake pumpkins, which is such a great idea so you don’t have to worry about them rotting (especially in this southern heat!) View her tutorial here!

Love the mix of pumpkins and lanterns in this photo!  Such a great idea to mix pumpkins with faux pumpkins to add texture to your stoop!

The front door in these images is clearly the inspiration for all of their front porch decor!  The mint green door, pumpkins and throw flows so beautifully with the white.  Such a simple and serene fall porch!

Starting a Blog!

Hi, my name is Kate Miles and I’m so excited to be starting a blog!  I have been a stay at home Mom for the past two years since having my sweet boy, Jackson.  I feel so lucky to have had this time to spend with him.  Prior to motherhood, I worked as an Interior Designer for a large furniture store and I’ve missed it!  In the past few months I have started a few small freelance design projects and am hoping to continue to grow my business, Kate Miles Interior Design.  Through this blog I intend to share any design projects that I’m working on, interior design topics, mom stuff, kid stuff, travel, fashion, and our life here in Charleston, South Carolina! Here is a recent photo of me, Jackson and my husband, Quinton.
